Best Surf Spots in India by Season: East Coast vs West Coast

One of the most common questions we get is: when & where should I surf? India’s east and west coasts operate on opposite monsoon cycles, which makes it possible to surf year-round, provided you pick the right coast for the right season.

West Coast (Karnataka, Kerala, Goa)

Season: October to April

Why it works: This post-monsoon season brings in dry days, clean conditions, and gentle offshore winds. Early mornings often bring glassy waves.

Top Spots:

  • Mulki (Karnataka): Gentle waves, super beginner-friendly, and a well-established surf school ecosystem. The river mouth (where back water meets the ocean) adds unique variation to waves.

  • Varkala (Kerala): Set against cliffs and palm trees, this town offers great beach breaks and a peaceful atmosphere.

  • Ashwem & Agonda (Goa): While not the most consistent, it can surprise you with decent swells between November and February.

Bonus: South Kerala, like Kovalam, also throws up good surfing windows in early winter.

East Coast (Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry)

Season: July to January

Why it works: This coast is protected from the southwest monsoon, and remains more consistent in the second half of the year.

Top Spots:

  • Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu): Known for its iconic temple on the shore, it has a strong surfing culture. The break here is fast and clean during season. Every year professional surf competitions are held in Mahabs.

  • Serenity Beach (Pondy): This beach lives up to its name. Mellow beach break, beautiful sunrises, and a friendly crowd. You can long and smooth rides at this beautiful beach break.

  • Kovalam (Chennai): Surprisingly consistent, especially in late summer and early winter. The waves here are punchier.

Final Thought:

India’s coastlines are diverse. Whether you're planning a short getaway or a longer surf holiday, timing your trip with the seasons makes all the difference.
