“Can I surf even if I don't know how to swim?"
Short answer: Yes, you can start.
Long answer: where you surf matters a lot.
As beginners ourselves once, we know the anxiety — deep water, waves, boards flying around, and the fear of not being “fit enough.” The good news? India has a few surf destinations that are especially forgiving, mellow, and beginner-friendly, even for non-swimmers (with the right instructors and conditions).
Here are our top picks.
🌊 Mulki, Karnataka

The OG surf capital of India
Mulki is where a large part of India’s surf journey began. Shallow waters, sandy bottoms, slow-rolling waves, and wide beaches make it incredibly forgiving for first-timers.
Most surf schools here are used to teaching absolute beginners and non-swimmers, starting lessons in waist-deep water and focusing heavily on safety and confidence before progression.
Best time to surf in Mulki: November to February
🌊 Pondicherry

Pondicherry is often where people catch their first-ever wave — and that’s not by accident. The long sand bank, warm water, beginner-friendly breaks, and so many well-established surf schools make it a great starting point.
Lessons are typically done close to shore, with instructors physically assisting beginners through pop-ups. While swimming isn’t compulsory, being comfortable in water helps you relax and enjoy the experience more.
Best time to surf in Pondicherry: March to September (June could sometimes be a hit or a miss)
🌊 Udupi, Karnataka

Quiet, underrated, and beginner-friendly
Udupi doesn’t shout about surfing — and that’s what makes it special. Fewer crowds, open beaches, and mellow waves create a calm learning environment.
Surf schools here tend to keep things slow and personal, which works brilliantly if you’re nervous or new to the ocean.
Best time to surf in Udupi: October to March
🌊 Kodi Bengre (Kodi Bengere)

Soft waves, wide beaches, perfect for beginners and non swimmers.
Close to Udupi, Kodi Bengre offers wide, open beaches with slow-breaking waves — ideal for learners. The conditions here allow instructors to keep beginners closer to shore for longer durations.
Best time to surf in Kodi Bengere: October to March
🌊 Kagal, Gokarna, Karnataka

Small town, surf scene is pretty new.
Kagal is still under the radar, but it’s quietly becoming a solid surf spot for learners. The lack of crowds and gentle wave patterns allow beginners to focus on basics without feeling rushed or watched.
Best time to surf in Kagal, Gokarna: November to March
🌊 Varkala, Kerala

Beginner-friendly waves with a vibe
Varkala is often misunderstood as “too advanced” — but that’s only partly true. Certain sections and seasons in Varkala offer beautiful, mellow waves perfect for beginners, especially with the right surf school.
If you surf between December to February, the waves are mellow and gentle. There are multiple surf spots and the a huge sandbar to surf in waist deep waters.
Best time to surf in Varkala for non swimmers: December to February
🌊 Final Word from Surf Club India

Surfing isn’t about being strong, fit, or fearless.
It’s about starting somewhere safe, with the right people.
India has incredible beginner surf spots — and if you choose wisely, your first wave can be joyful instead of terrifying.
Whether you’re a non-swimmer, a nervous beginner, or just ocean-curious — there is a place for you to start.
And once you do… there’s no going back. 💙
