Surfing in India: What Should I Pack?

Planning to surf? Planning right can be the difference between a smooth ride and a wet mess. Here’s a handy checklist for what to pack for a surf trip in India.

The Must-Haves:

  • Boardshorts or Swimwear: Quick-dry, snug-fit surf wear is key. Wearing something loose will only make it harder to get comfortable in the water.

Wear comfortable but snug fitting surf wear

  • Rash Guard: Protects against sunburn and board rashes. This is extremely important, as you will otherwise develop bruises on your hands (especially since you will be using your elbows on the surfboard between paddling).

Opt for rash guards as a natural protection against sunburn, board rashes, scrapes from the sand and the occasional jellyfish

  • Sunscreen: High SPF, water-resistant, and ideally reef-safe. Apply often.

  • Microfiber Towel: Compact and quick-drying. Great for travel.

  • Flip-Flops + Beach Bag/Plastic bag to keep your wet clothes

Gear & Extras:

  • Booties: Useful in reef breaks like Mahabalipuram.

  • Zinc Stick: For nose/face UV protection. (Sunscreen works just fine, just ensure that it's waterproof. Apply it before and after your surf.

  • Dry Bag: Keeps electronics and clothes safe. A basic plastic plan should also do.

  • Waterproof Pouch: Great for beach-to-board transitions.

Tech and Travel:

  • GoPro / DJI / Action Cam: Optional but fun.

  • Hydration + Snacks: Water bottles and quick energy bars. (Really important. Carry electral or fast&up electrolytes.

Bonus Tips:

  • Carry light but functional clothing

  • A first-aid kit with Band-Aids and antiseptic is smart. Especially if you are surfing in beaches that have jellyfish. Carry some musle relaxers (just in case of emergencies).

Whether it’s your first surf trip or your tenth, prepping right makes sure the only thing you wipe out on is a wave, not your plan.
