Do I Need to Learn Swimming for Surfing?

Yes. If you plan to surf, knowing how to swim is not optional – it’s essential.

Why Swimming Is Non-Negotiable

Surfing involves falling, paddling out, getting stuck in currents, and getting under waves. If you’re not confident in water, this can quickly turn dangerous.

Being comfortable in water goes a long way when you're aiming to ride some good waves

What Level of Swimming Is Enough?

You don’t need competitive swim skills, but you should:

  • Be able to swim 25-50 meters without stopping

Being able to swim helps you remain calm in the ocean

  • Be able to float and tread water comfortably (This is not mandatory, but it's a super helpful skill)

  • Be calm if you get hit by a wave or caught in a current. Make sure you watch for people near you, push your board and go underwater if you come head-on with a big wave.
