If you’ve been googling “When is the best time to surf in Varkala?” — here’s the honest answer:

It depends on your level, your vibe, and how much chaos (or calm) you want in the water. But let me break it down for you as a beginner.

Varkala isn’t a year-round beginner paradise like Pondicherry. It has moods. Some months are clean and mellow. Some are heavy and wild. And some are just not worth planning a surf trip around.

Here’s a proper month-by-month breakdown so you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

But long story short, TLDR version for you.

If you’re a beginner:

👉 November to February is your window.

👉 January & February is probably the sweet spot.

January – Clean, Friendly & Busy

One of the best months for beginners.

  • Small to medium, manageable waves

  • Great pick for first-timers and non-swimmers

  • Peak tourist season, so lineups can be crowded

Water is warm. Weather is perfect. Post-surf cliff sunset is just a cherry on the top.

If it’s your first time surfing? January is safe, easy, and fun.

February – Sweet Spot

If we had to pick a “safe bet” month — February is it.

  • Consistent beginner-friendly waves

  • Less chaotic than peak December. Not so crowded either.

  • Good learning conditions

It’s ideal for surf retreats. Waves are playful, not intimidating. You’ll actually progress instead of just surviving.

March – Still Good (Depends on the swell conditions & your luck)

March continues the good run if you are lucky. The usual spots stop working so surf schools start scouting for new spots.

  • Fun beginner-to-intermediate waves

  • Afternoons are gonna be HOT and sunny.

  • Fewer crowds compared to Jan

Mornings are your best bet. By noon, the wind usually picks up. If you’re planning a 4–5 day surf trip, March works beautifully if you have already surfed before.

Off season officially starts from April and ends in October.

April – Transition Mode

This is where things start shifting.

  • Conditions get inconsistent

  • Wind becomes more unpredictable

  • Can still work on good days

It’s not bad — but it’s not peak season either. If you’re flexible and okay with mixed sessions, April can still deliver.

May – Pre-Monsoon Energy

May can surprise you.

  • Bigger swells start rolling in

  • Not ideal for absolute beginners

  • Better for confident intermediates

  • It gets super hot during the day

Humidity increases. Ocean gets stronger. It’s less “cute beginner waves” and more “okay, now this is real.”

June – Monsoon Starts

Heavy monsoon energy.

  • Rough sea

  • Strong currents

  • Not suitable for beginners

Surf schools usually take a break & pause. The ocean is powerful, dramatic, and not playful.

If you’re learning — skip June.

July – Full Monsoon

This is not a learning month.

  • Choppy water

  • Big swells

  • Safety concerns

It’s beautiful in a stormy way. But surfing? Not beginner-friendly at all.

August – Still Monsoon

Similar to July.

  • Wild ocean

  • Strong rips

  • Unpredictable conditions

Unless you’re an experienced surfer chasing monsoon swells, this isn’t the time.

September – Slow Reset

The ocean starts calming down.

  • Inconsistent but improving

  • Not recommended for beginners, espcially non swimmers.

  • Occasional clean windows

  • Shoulder season

You might get lucky. You might not. It’s a transitional month.

October – Getting Better

Things begin to shape up.

  • Swell reduces

  • Cleaner mornings

  • Fewer tourists since it's the festive month (Diwali & Dussehra and all)

  • Not great for beginners even though surf lessons start during this time, it might become overwhelming.

If you prefer quieter lineups, October can be underrated. Not to forget, it can rain in Oct from time to time.

November – Season Begins

Now we’re talking.

  • Cleaner waves

  • More consistency

  • Good for beginners & non swimmers (Especially towards the end of November)

The surf season starts feeling stable again. Weather is great. Crowd levels are moderate.

Solid month for a first trip.

December – Classic Varkala

December is beautiful and busy.

  • Friendly beginner waves

  • Waves can be very mellow and the vibe is immaculate. It's our favorite month to surf in Varkala.

  • Warm water

  • Peak travel season but very less people in the water in the last week of december

Christmas & New Year bring more people — but also amazing energy. Morning sessions are golden.

So… When Is the Best Time to surf in Varkala?

If you’re a beginner:

👉 November to February is your window.

👉 February is probably the sweet spot.

If you’re more confident and want bigger waves:

👉 Late April to May can offer punchier surf. A killer spot called Cowies start working and it can have some mellow waves.

Avoid monsoon months (June–August) if you’re new.

One Last Thing

Varkala isn’t just about waves.

The cliffs. The cafes. The sunsets. The chill surfer crowd. The after-surf coconut water that tastes like heaven.

Even on days when the waves aren’t perfect — the vibe usually is.

If you want mellow learning waves with golden light and post-surf cliff walks, plan between November and Feb.

And if you show up during the right window?

Varkala won’t disappoint 🌊✨
